October 2025 Health News

See you at the Halloween Health Fair!

Fall is here, bringing with it crisp air, colorful leaves, and the excitement of the season ahead. As we look forward to the magic of the holidays, it’s a great time to focus on feeling our best and helping others do the same.

Make sure you’re ready for the months ahead by getting your flu shot, staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccines, and practicing simple healthy habits like good handwashing, eating nourishing seasonal foods, and staying home when you’re not feeling your best.

Also, preparing for colder weather now can help keep families and neighbors safe and well. Please take a moment to reach out to those who might need a little extra support, especially older adults or anyone living alone. With schools, sports, and community events in full swing, let’s celebrate all that connects us and the positive impact we can make together.

By caring for ourselves and one another, we’ll keep our community strong, resilient, and thriving all season long, resulting in a healthier community for all.

We’re serious about car seat safety!

Summit County Health hosts car seat safety classes each month for parents and caregivers who want to make sure their car seats are installed correctly and being used the right way.

Underage Substance Use: Talk with the Kids in Your Life

Starting the conversation about underage drinking and drug use can feel intimidating—but it’s one of the most important steps any caring adult can take to support a young person’s health and future. Experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend beginning these conversations as early as age 9.

Here are five key things to keep in mind—along with practical ways to put them into action:
  1. Show You Disapprove of Underage Drinking and Other Drug Misuse. Young people are less likely to drink or use drugs when they know the adults in their lives are against it.

  2. Show You Care About Their Health, Wellness, and Success. Kids want to know the adults around them are on their side. Framing the conversation around their goals makes a difference.

  3. Show You’re a Good Source of Information. If you don’t talk with them, they’ll get information elsewhere—often from peers or the internet.

  4. Show You’re Paying Attention. Young people should know the adults in their lives are aware of what’s happening and that risky behaviors won’t go unnoticed.

  5. Build Their Skills and Strategies. Help them feel prepared to handle peer pressure or tricky situations.

Happy fall, everyone!
